Amanda Mansfield has faced challenges in her life: the disapproval of her critical father and the near-fatal accident that ended a promising military career and resulted in her transformation to cyborg. Now a Cyber Operations field agent, she volunteers to lead the most dangerous Cy-Ops mission ever: infiltrating enemy territory to find the secret hideaway of a terrorist mastermind. The last thing she needs is an added complication.
Like him. Sonny Masters. Her partner. A streetwise former thug turned cyber operative with a lethal grin. He can’t seem to understand she’s in charge and does not require his protection. He’s everything she dislikes—and everything her body wants.
If they can keep their hands off each other long enough to complete the mission, they might just get out alive…

I haven't read the other books in this series, so I'm definitely glad that this one was standalone! It was definitely enough to make me want to read the ones I've missed. It was outside of my comfort zone-- I don't usually read this kind of romance. I generally prefer my space-age sci-fi on the big screen, but every now and then a really, really good book comes along. This was one of those. I loved the story and the characters. Even the aliens were complex and seemed real.

It was a really short read, so both the action and the romance moved at warp-speed, but it was all handled so well. I didn't feel left wanting more as far as plot development or anything (though I was certainly left wanting more... in a good way!). Both the writing and formatting were excellent as well--as you know-- those are some of my biggest nitpicks with anything I read. No complaints there. I did run across a term or two that for a little bit I was confused until I figured out what it was referring to. But that problem was probably my own fault for not reading books 1-3 first! Plus, it's sci-fi, so it gets a pass in that department anyway, weird terminology is kind of the norm.

All in all, a great book that has me running to read the ones I've missed!

Fen is a half-werewolf who's lost her pack. All she wants is a home and an ordinary human life, which means seeking out the deadbeat mom who abandoned her a decade ago.
Her journey takes her to a simple small town that's serene on the outside yet contains a rotten core of complicated danger. A stalker, a bomb threat, and a rogue shifter keep her hopping, but Fen's greatest struggle lies within her own heart.

Will she be able mend her relationship with her mom and find a place to belong...and can she do so without risking her mother's life?

I adore this series! I'm also sad that it is ending with the next book. Fen is such a strong character. We see her mistakes, her fears, her failures, and her insecurities, all without her seeming like a sniveling, whiny brat. Hunter is the epitome of alpha male goodness! And I don't mean goodness like "good guy" (which he is), but goodness like "YUMMY!" He's a man of few words, but they're words you sit on the edge of your seat waiting for.

I love Aimee's writing style. It's complex yet not confusing, it tells the story without telling the story, but showing the story, and it immerses you in her world fully. It's easy to forget that you're reading it instead of living it.

The plot was interesting, though I can't say much about it, I don't want to ruin the story! Go read it if you want to know what happens!  Appearances can certainly be deceiving and danger can come in many forms, simply put, don't overlook the details in this one!

—Isa

Guilt from my initial reaction to his injuries tormented me.

At first I was determined not to stare at his face, horrified that he’d be insulted by my reaction. But the second his face came into focus, I held back a sob, and a lump grew in my throat.

The right side of his face was mangled, taut raw flesh accented with blue and red scars. His jaw was uneven, and his right eyelid slumped, filled with what must’ve been a glass eye. The remnant of his ear was dappled and twisted. But the other half of his face was clean-shaven, handsome and rugged—a bright turquoise eye, strong chin, black hair shorn in a Marine Corps high and tight haircut.

Flashes filled my brain, stored images I must’ve retained from newsreels and graphic war movies. Had it been a roadside bomb? An outmanned firefight? Some type of chemical attack? I wouldn’t ask him. For now, I was content with the trust he had shown me by unveiling his scars.

“I guess I should’ve gone to the party as Two-Face,” he said, his voice somber.

“No, you’re beautiful. You make a sexy Hulk.” I caressed his face, my fingers tracing its divots. “Plus, then you’d be DC, and I’d be Marvel. We would’ve never had a chance.”

He let out a small laugh, but flinched at my touch. “You’ve seen me now. You’re free to go.”

This was my chance to end this night safely and in control.

Or I could get wild—do what I’d only ever read about in my books.

Cut loose.

I’d always admired those women who owned their sexuality, like Marisol. Indulged in pleasure without any guilt or shame. I wondered what it would be like to live in the moment.

I was picky, but I still had needs, and right now I needed some action—and sadly these days the warm glow from my eReader was about the closest that I felt to having any heat radiating on my body. But even the artificial afterglow of one hot night with my latest romance hero did little to warm my heart. After all, I hadn’t hooked up with a guy since winter break. I missed everything about being around men—their masculine scents, their non-subtle eye fucks, their rough hands. At least my book boyfriends were gorgeous, witty, and incredible lovers—but most importantly, they wanted more from their heroines than just a one-night stand.

And I was sure this man wasn’t looking for anything more than a hookup.

Isa, put on your clothes and get the hell out of here. This is not you. You are responsible, conservative, and goal-oriented.

Faced with the opportunity to indulge in my fantasy of hot, wild sex with a hunky alpha male, I had to admit that the reality of the situation made me realize how rigid I’d always been.

But somewhere deep in my soul I wanted to lose myself in this damaged man, give him pleasure to alleviate his pain, experience ecstasy and release.

And maybe he could heal me too.

The heat between us rose, and I erased the distance between us, like two magnets being drawn together.

I traced his face with my fingers, running the tips over his lips. Rough, wild, and dangerous. As he remained still, my hands explored his incredible body—rock-hard muscles, deeply embedded scars, and intricate ink. All making him look like the sexiest badass alive.

He bit his bottom lip, his pupil dilated.

Hungry.

Ravenous.

Intense.

His chest heaved, and the sight of this raw, ferocious man before me sent a shock between my legs. I ached for him to relieve the tension that consumed my body.

I pressed my palm onto his chest, the green body paint staining my hand. “I want to stay. I want you.”
Damn, did I just say that? My words betrayed my will.

The left side of his mouth widened into a grin, although his right side remained frozen in time. With one arm, he clutched my ass and wrapped my legs around his waist. I gasped as his mouth covered mine. His lips were neither soft nor sweet—they were hard and hungry. The length of his cock and the hair on his chest let me know that, unlike my previous boyish lovers, I was about to be fucked by a real man.

There was no turning back. I needed this Marine inside me in the worst way.

His kisses were out of control. I’d never been kissed like this before, like I was an oasis in the middle of the desert. His mouth tasted minty and hot, and his manliness intoxicated me. He awoke a latent desire in me, summoning my inner wildcat. I kissed him back, kissed him everywhere. His mouth, his lips, his neck, his scars. My hands explored his insanely ripped body, stroking him like he was my personal sex toy. I gripped his hair and dug my nails into his back, kneading him closer to me, never wanting to let him go.

I’d always been the good girl, living vicariously through my friends’ hookups, only indulging in my fantasies in the safety of my mind. Whether it was from a place of fear or control, I had never allowed myself to fulfill my desires. But tonight, with this nameless sex god in my grasp, I made a silent vow to not hold anything back. I was going to let him fuck me like it was the last night of the world.

As Heather considers the possibility of immortality, initiated by her lovers, the Magus Corps intrudes. Betrayed by the warlock who managed to infiltrate the coven, their location is no longer secret. Knowing full well that the Corps won’t tolerate rogues, hurried plans are made to relocate.

But the Templars close in as well. Centuries of searching has finally paid off for a cruel Temple Master who leads his army closer. Though he senses the Wiccans are within his reach, his success is guaranteed when he manages to capture their High Priestess, Heather’s sister.

I'm not sure how I ended up reading this book without reading the previous three, but the beginning of the book definitely confused me a lot because of that. Luckily, I have read some of Hazel's other books from series set in the same world, so I was able to catch on pretty quickly. I DO NOT recommend reading this one without reading the first three! Beyond that (which is TOTALLY my fault!), this book was really enjoyable.

To be completely honest, I was a little eeked out by the foursome action at first. Not for the reasons you would think... it was because Hazel's work is always extremely intimate and the sex scenes are so well written that I actually felt like a peeping Tom. It didn't take long though, before I was completely spellbound and racing to get to the next page.

The characters are unique and have a lot of personality. I really love that none of them are perfect, they've all made mistakes and continue to make mistakes. The plot is fun and well-thought out, it doesn't take a backseat to the very erotic nature of the writing. I absolutely love her use and descriptions of magic--they actually make magic magical again! My only regret is that it ends on a cliffhanger, so now I have to wait for the next one.

Character Interview: The Sacrifice by Mia McKimmy

Author: Mia McKimmy
Series: Sons of Sivadia
Publication Date: May 2016
Publisher: Self Published
Age: NA+
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Pages: 323
Find the Book: Amazon | Goodreads

Will their love survive the sacrifices that must be made?
Almost three hundred years ago, a race of immortals fled the planet of Sivadia and came to Earth. When a war divided their race, each side was led by twin sons of the Sivadian king.

From the moment Riana Martin meets Cy, the dangerously sexy Sivadian Protector, she knows it will be hard to resist him. From the first touch, Cy sets off a firestorm inside her heart and soul.

Cy knows Riana is his destiny, but since their father named him successor to the throne, his twin has been determined to destroy him.

Can Cy protect Riana from his brother…one of the most evil beings to ever walk this planet?

Character Interview

Ozeas (Oz)

Oz is commander of the Protectors, an elite group of fighters who protect humanity from feeders, those among their race who are addicted to human blood. They also train Sivadian females to protect themselves from being abducted by feeders in order to breed with them and increase their army. Protectors fight this war everyday, if they lose, humanity will pay the price.

Mia McKimmy is conducting this interview at the Protector’s compound in the Appalachian Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina, a few weeks before the events in the book takes place.

Mia: You’re a pretty busy guy. If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

Oz: (Oz hesitates, and leans back in his office chair) There are a lot of whitewater rafting venues throughout these mountains. I’ve always wanted to Kayak down the Occoee River. Alone.

Mia: Why alone?

Oz: Being in charge of every chapter of Protectors on Earth is a demanding job. I don’t have a lot of alone time.

Mia: What impression do you make on people when they first meet you? And how about after they’ve known you for a while?

Oz: I’d say most people are intimidated because of my size. Some of my fighter’s  say I have a permanent scowl on my face. Most people are surprised I have a sense of humor. I like to have fun…I just don’t get to do it much.

(Mia stares at the muscles protruding beneath his black t-shirt) How tall are you?

Oz: 6’ 6” While some humans are as tall as us, most Sivadians are better than six foot…even our females are tall.

Mia: What are you most proud of in your life?

Oz: Starting the Protectors.

Mia: Is there anything you’re proud of on a personal level?

Oz: (Oz hesitates) Well, I’m proud of how Cy turned out. His father died when he was fourteen, and I’ve tried to step in as a substitute father. But he’s always been a good boy. I can’t take much credit for the person he’s become.

Mia: What are you most ashamed of in your life?

Oz: (He shakes his head and then looks out the window, pain consuming his features) If I had been guarding Cieran, my best friend and king, he’d still be alive. Cy and Vind would’ve had their father, and this whole damn war with the feeders would’ve never happened.

(Mia decides to lighten the mood, since the atmosphere in the room went wonky with that last question) Describe your ideal mate.

Oz: (More head shaking) Well, she’s beautiful, black hair, green eyes, and extremely smart.

Mia: Sounds like you’ve already met her.

Oz: I have. It didn’t work out. (His eyes narrow) Don’t ask me why.

Mia: (I need to wrap this up before I cross some hidden boundary and really piss this mountain of a man off)  One more question and I’ll let you get back to work. What would you like it to say on your tombstone?

Oz: Oz was here, now he’s gone. (He chuckles, then stands and extends his hand) It was nice meeting you, Miss McKimmy. I’ll escort you to your car.

Mia: Thank you for allowing me this interview.

Oz: I would say anytime, but then I’d be lying. (He smiles, as if he were joking. Mia knows it was the absolute truth)

Blog Post: 1/17/15

My name is Kayla and I’m a blogger who believes in fairy tales. Through the anonymity of my blog, along with my reviews of the steamy novels I like to read, I tell the stories of my own search for love. No matter how disastrous they turn out—and believe me, you will ask yourself ‘Did that really happen?’—I never gave up, knowing my soul mate was out there somewhere.

When my big brother invited me to move to Houston for a semester of college, I jumped at the opportunity to leave my small hometown to see what it was like to live in a big city. Having no friends and not knowing where to go, I met a guy online and met up with him that night. Because…YOLO, right?

Turns out, he was an okay guy. Not ‘The One’, but still, a good enough guy to spend time with. But then, he introduced me to his best friend Jason, and my world tilted on its axis. The dark, tough, tatted-up guy, who was too broody for his own good, captivated me.
But he made it perfectly clear, I wasn’t his type.

Blog Post

Heartbroken and devastated, I moved back home to North Carolina after the man I loved more than anything told me he didn’t want me anymore.

After my disastrous dating history, I had finally found the one, my soul mate, and then he just threw me away like I meant nothing to him. So, what was I supposed to do now?

I did what any woman who had her heart ripped to shreds would do. I rebounded. And I rebounded hard.

My life spun and progressed at whirlwind speed as I tried desperately to fill the hole Jason had left inside me.

I had myself fooled for a while there, until the newness of everything wore off, until the whirlwind slowed to a grinding halt and I was forced to stop and realize exactly what I’d done. I suppose I could’ve trained myself to be content with Aiden, but all I did was…

Barely breathing turned into surviving.

When life gives you lemons, it’s time for shots of tequila. That’s my new saying in life, and trust me, life handed me lots of lemons.

For eighteen years I took those lemons that life and “destiny” threw at me and made lemonade, but I’m no longer a naive girl. I was forced to grow up too fast and the one person I depended on turned his back on me. So now I say screw the lemonade and just give me a bottle of tequila, because I don’t believe in destiny anymore.

There is no pre-designed path set out for each of us. Sometimes bad things happen, it’s just a part of life. It sucks, but you have to pick yourself up and get on with your life. I’m done just sitting around and waiting for my life to change or something good to just fall in my lap. It took me awhile to understand, but once I was done being the doormat to destiny, it was time for me to take control. I would decide where I would go in life and what would happen. It wouldn't always be pretty, it would sometimes hurt like hell, but I would make sure I lived my life to the fullest.

It's time to rewrite destiny.

A few years ago, there was this story that would always play out in my head and no matter how many times I went through it, from beginning to end, it would never fade. So I decided to put it on paper. I didn’t plan on publishing it, but when it was almost done, a friend asked to read it. She said it was a story that needed to be shared. And that’s what started my writing career.

I love all genres of books, and even though I started with writing MC Romance, I have a whole book of ideas, so you can expect more from me than just MC, though romance is in my blood.

Even though I currently work two jobs, my ultimate dream is to become a full time author. I want to be able to spend my days filling pages with stories. I want to be the reason people find a reason to smile or laugh from lines on a page. Reading a book allows me to live in someone else’s shoes, even if only for a few minutes. It’s a way to leave my life and troubles behind and I want to be help others do that as well.
